Lindsey Tippett – a Teen with a Mission

“Lindsey’s Lifesavers” Hope to Raise Over 200 Units of Blood
with the Community Blood Council of New Jersey
and the White Horse Volunteer Fire Company
on November 10th, 2003

Ultimate Goal is 5,000 Units in Three Months

Lindsey Tippett looks and acts like most of her freshman classmates at Hamilton High West. But Lindsey’s a 14-year-old with a difference. Two years ago, she was diagnosed with an inoperable form of Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer that afflicts adolescents. Lindsey’s cancer is inoperable, located in her sinus cavity behind her right eye. At this point, Lindsey isn’t sure of her long-term prognosis, but she’s not waiting around for time. This is a kid who wants to make her mark in the world by helping others. She’s committed to helping other kids who have cancer, and who need blood and blood products.

Lindsey’s Lifesavers
With the help of her school friends, who have dubbed themselves “Lindsey’s Lifesavers,” and the White Horse Volunteer Fire Company along with the Community Blood Council of New Jersey, Lindsey’s organized a blood drive slated for Monday, November 10th at the White Horse Firehouse. The Firehouse is located at 19 Locust Avenue in Hamilton from 5 to 9 p.m. Another thing we’ve arranged is dinner for everyone who comes to the firehouse and donates blood, as well as providing free babysitting services.

Initially, the plans were for a single blood drive. But it was decided that Lindsey would spearhead a 3-month campaign to help CBCNJ collect FIVE THOUSAND units of blood and blood products over a three month period, from November through the end of January.

Giving to Others
Lindsey knows she’s not alone in her fight with cancer, and wants to help others. “One of the ways I can help other kids is by doing this blood drive program,” she says. “I don’t want other kids to have to go through the kinds of things that I’ve undergone. If we can collect over 200 units of blood at our blood drive on the 10th, and if we can get even more people to sign up to give blood and platelets at the Community Blood Council of NJ over the next three months, I know that we can save hundreds of kids with cancer and other diseases, as well as people who’ve been in accidents.”
