CBC-NJ Now Welcomes Those with Hereditary Hemochromatosis!
The Community Blood Council of New Jersey, Inc. has received a variance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
As of May 2, 2005, we are now able to draw blood from people who have been diagnosed with hereditary hemochromatosis. People who meet all of the regulatory requirements for whole blood donation will be pleased to know that their blood can now be used for transfusion purposes. They can now help to save the lives of others while being treated.
Hemochromatosis is a blood disorder that causes the body to absorb excess iron. According to the American Hemochromatosis Foundation, it is the most common hereditary disease in the United States. People with undiagnosed hemochromatosis may suffer from arthritis or abnormal liver disease.
One of the easiest ways of treating hemochromatosis is by drawing blood (phlebotomy). CBC-NJ will perform phlebotomies on those with hereditary hemochromatosis free of charge, whether or not they meet the requirements for being a blood donor. All we require is that a Therapeutic Phlebotomy request form be completed by your doctor. We will keep this form on file at our blood center. For further information, please call Penny Moyer, Director of Donor Services, at (609) 883-9750 extension 117.
