LABOR DAY BLOOD SHORTAGE
No Type O Blood on Shelves
Situation Dire Going into Labor Day Weekend
Ewing Twp., NJ...August 31, 2006...The Community Blood Council of New Jersey (CBC-NJ) reports that it has no Type O blood on its shelves as we go into the Labor Day weekend.
"The situation is very serious," comments James J. Gosnay, CEO of CBC-NJ. "It could be devastating, especially if there is any sort of major trauma event over the weekend, or a series of automobile accidents."
"Trauma victims usually require Type O- blood," Gosnay continued. "Because it is the universal donor it can be used in emergencies and for pediatric transfusions. Most people don’t know their blood type, or don’t carry cards stating what their blood type is."
Statistically, there are more automobile accidents over Labor Day weekend than New Year’s. Each automobile accident victim can require up to 40 units of blood.
CBC-NJ is the major supplier for the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, as well as a provider for over twenty other area hospitals.
Statewide, blood donations are far lower in the summer months than the rest of the year. CBC-NJ is also encouraging people to call for appointments and to stop in at its center in Ewing to donate. The center is open from 7 am – 5 pm on Friday and 7 am – 1 pm on Saturday. Additionally, a blood drive is being held on Friday and Saturday at the Trenton Farmer’s Market in the Bloodmobile from 9 am until 1 pm.
Other blood drives for upcoming weeks are listed on the blood center’s website, www.GiveBloodNJ.org, or people can call the center toll free at 1-866-2Give NJ.
The Community Blood Council of New Jersey is headquartered at 1410 Parkside Avenue (at the corner of Olden Ave.) in Ewing Twp. The local phone number is (609) 883-9750, or toll-free at 1-866-2GiveNJ.
