Martin Luther King Day of Service:
Beck Middle School Students Gain First-Hand Experience
When school children learn about community service, they are started on the road to becoming life-long practitioners. We salute Mandy Baker, a seventh grade language arts teacher at Beck Middle School in Cherry Hill, NJ, for encouraging her students to participate in their second annual blood drive, celebrating the Martin Luther King Day of Service.
These kids, most of whom are seventh graders, are learning by doing. They made posters for the drive, signed up donors, ran the canteen and gave out thank you gifts. The blood collected on Monday, January 17th directly benefited their own community, and was sent to Virtua West Jersey Hospital in Voorhees.

Service Means Good Times.
Community service doesn’t need to be “work” as these students learned – it can be fun! (Top photo, L-R) Seventh graders Lona Wang, Maria Salvemini, Melissa Goldstein and Mandy Frantz helped out at the sign-up table. (Bottom photo, L-R) Bryan Birchmeier, Rishi Sarkar, Naomi Avner, Bela Kraut, Kirsten DeMarco and Jen Segrest enjoyed giving T-shirts to donors.
